In 1997 I opened the world’s first online academic journal- free to submit and publish – Open Access. Within 6 months I had received legal threats from 2 major publishers telling me to shut the website down as it was causing them irreparable harm! 25 years later we see over 35,000 online journals- many free – and whilst the large publishers survived, they became very creative to find ways, at the academics expense, to keep their shareholders happy. And thus, I have founded and opened SCOPE – to give academics a public face that shows their caring and kind dispositions, not the ID Number that the main commercial entities reduce academics to.  SCOPE is about recognizing the 5 million academics, 96 million teachers, and 250 million undergraduates for what they do – caring kind professionals who are leading this world to the next future. And no amount of Commercial interference can stop this momentum.

I have been trained in 3 fields, medicine, law, and linguistics. The latter two are those I have set up Open Access online academic journals in.  The first two fields are dynamic with constant research breakthroughs with medical breakthroughs and new interpretations on laws paving the way to a better future – yet sadly I feel the area of linguistics (second language acquisition) has not progressed since the heady days of the renowned Professors Krashen and Ellis mid 1980s early 1990s. Indeed, such is the pressure on academics in these fields to publish (and statistically we know 90% of papers will not be read) such is the power of the major indexes that they control the lives of academia. And this is very wrong. In 1997 I was legally threatened by the big commercial entities- I met them head on and the profession won – in 2021 I was threatened by SCOPUS again – anonymous threats from a powerful commercial entity, for the future I see for academia is not the commercial future their Boards see- I met SCOPUS head on and the answer is SCOPE. In 1997 I gave birth to Open Access online journals. This year, 2022, SCOPE WILL recognize academics as brilliant researchers, caring and wise persons, who will shape the world’s future.
